YMCA

We cherish the relationship built over the years with the YMCA Oz in San Diego. YMCA Oz is a two-week residential treatment program for teenagers from 12 to 17 who are struggling with a range of health and social issues such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, and homelessness. Many of these teens do not have consistent access to education. As members of Saltman Quarterly’s Community Outreach Committee, we partnered with YMCA Oz to provide biology tutoring and engaging science activities to the youth in this program. During visits we aim to make science interactive, fun, and approachable. We work to build an interest in science by exposing the teens to a variety of undergraduate research projects, at the same time giving them models to aspire to. We hope to leave the young minds of YMCA Oz eager and excited to learn more about the biological sciences.

This collaboration has been halted during the COVID-19 pandemic but we look forward to resuming our partnership with the YMCA Oz soon.
