All Staff Positions:

Saltman Quarterly Staff Writer

Writers are responsible for writing a features article on a topic that has been discussed with and approved by the Features Editor.  Writers are responsible for interviewing the appropriate people and collecting images to be submitted along with the final article by the completion deadline.

Under the Scope Staff Writer

Writers will compose an article including key abstracts they find intriguing and relevant to research being done in one of five categories represented at the annual Biological Sciences Student Research Showcase, and discussed with and approved by the UTS Features Editor. A writer is responsible for interviewing the appropriate people and collecting images to be submitted along with the final article by the completion deadline. 

Online Reporter

The Online Reporter writes articles on biology topics that they find fascinating and would like to explore, with the approval of the Online Editor. The reporter integrates feedback into their articles and fine tunes them with interviews, images and more — eventually posting their own work on the Saltman Quarterly website for the UCSD community and the biological community to read and enjoy.

Bloggers

The student blogger writes and develops a blog on student life throughout the year. Blogs are featured on SQ Online and provide a unique perspective on what it’s like to be a biology student on campus. We select four bloggers with diverse backgrounds and interests

Publicity Committee

The Publicity Committee is responsible for assisting the Publicity Chair in maintaining and publicizing online content and in promoting SQ and organizing internal events. Members will be responsible for helping gather research submissions and distribute publications. 

Review Board Member

Review Board Members are assigned to one of our four sections based on their interest and availability. Members will receive 1-3 manuscripts each quarter for personal review. Members will then submit a review form detailing their analysis and opinion of the paper which will be taken into serious consideration by both the author and the SQ editorial staff.

Community Outreach Committee

The Community Outreach Committee Member is part of a dedicated staff that helps SQ’s Community Outreach efforts to expose K-12 students in the San Diego area to STEM, research, and communication. Assignments and responsibilities will be in accordance with the Community Outreach Chair, and each member will have an opportunity to help create, plan, and execute the outreach activities.

Technical Editor

The Technical Editor is responsible for helping all Saltman Quarterly writers produce their best writing by checking for grammar, spelling, structure, and more. Experience with reading scientific literature is preferred, and strict adherence to all deadlines is essential.

Photographers

The Staff Photographers are responsible for capturing “biology in action” through high-quality images. They will also work together with the different groups within SQ to capture images that will be incorporated into both the print and online media published by SQ.

Illustrators

The Staff Illustrator is responsible for complementing written content with creative and appropriate illustrations to enhance the reader experience in both understanding and appreciation of the subject matter.

SQ Features Design

SQ Designers are responsible for creating the layout and style of the SQ Journal. Designers must have knowledge of how to create visually-interesting, professional-looking publications. They report to the SQ and UTS Production editors and work with Photography, Illustration, and Research teams.

SQ Research Design Editor

 The Research Design Editor is responsible for designing the Research section of the journal. The editor must be proficient in layout and design, and must know how to create a professional-looking publication. He or she reports to the Production Editor and works with the Features Design Editor to ensure that a cohesive style is kept throughout both sections.

SQ Special Sections Design Editor

 The Special Sections Design Editor is responsible for designing other non-classified parts of the journal, including the Saltman Dedication and Senior Honors Theses section. This editor must be proficient in layout and design, and must know how to create a professional-looking publication. This editor reports to the Production Editor and works with the Features Design Editor and Research Design Editor to ensure that a cohesive style is kept throughout the journal.

UTS Features Design Editor

The UTS Features Design Editor is responsible for designing the Features section of Under the Scope. The editor must be proficient in layout and design, and must know how to create a professional-looking publication. Since this editor is working on Features, there is more room for creativity and different layout styles. This editor reports to Production Editors.

Web Intern

The Web Intern will be responsible for helping the Webmaster manage all aspects of SQ Online. The Web Intern position allows the student to be introduced into the inner workings of SQ Online, and is a stepping stone to the Webmaster position on SQ’s Core Staff.
