The All Staff application is now CLOSED.
Applications for the 2018-2019 fall recruitment cycle will open on 09/25. Applicants will be contacted for interviews the week following the application deadline for the respective positions. Review Board applicants will not be required to interview, but will need to attend a mandatory introductory workshop (more details will be emailed to Review Board applicants).
For the 2018-2019 academic year, we will be recruiting for the positions listed below:
Under the Scope Staff Writer
Writers will compose an article including key abstracts they find intriguing and relevant to research being done in one of five categories represented at the annual Biological Sciences Student Research Showcase, and discussed with and approved by the UTS Features Editor. A writer is responsible for interviewing the appropriate people and collecting images to be submitted along with the final article by the completion deadline.
The Online Reporter writes articles on biology topics that they find fascinating and would like to explore, with the approval of the Online Editor. The reporter integrates feedback into their articles and fine tunes them with interviews, images and more — eventually posting their own work on the Saltman Quarterly website for the UCSD community and the biological community to read and enjoy.
The Publicity Committee is responsible for assisting the Publicity Chair in maintaining and publicizing online content and in promoting SQ and organizing internal events. Members will be responsible for helping gather research submissions and distribute publications.
Review Board Member
Review Board Members are assigned to one of our four sections based on their interest and availability. Members will receive 1-3 manuscripts each quarter for personal review. Members will then submit a review form detailing their analysis and opinion of the paper which will be taken into serious consideration by both the author and the SQ editorial staff.
Community Outreach Committee
The Community Outreach Committee Member is part of a dedicated staff that helps SQ’s Community Outreach efforts to expose K-12 students in the San Diego area to STEM, research, and communication. Assignments and responsibilities will be in accordance with the Community Outreach Chair, and each member will have an opportunity to help create, plan, and execute the outreach activities.
The student Blogger writes and develops a blog on student life throughout the year. Blogs are featured on SQ Online and provide a unique perspective on what it’s like to be a biology student on campus. We select four bloggers with diverse backgrounds and interests
The Technical Editor is responsible for helping all Saltman Quarterly writers produce their best writing by checking for grammar, spelling, structure, and more. Experience with reading scientific literature is preferred, and strict adherence to all deadlines is essential.
The Staff Photographers are responsible for capturing “biology in action” through high-quality images. They will also work together with the different groups within SQ to capture images that will be incorporated into both the print and online media published by SQ.
The Staff Illustrator is responsible for complementing written content with creative and appropriate illustrations to enhance the reader experience in both understanding and appreciation of the subject matter.
